I waited for another half hour, saw that it was still stuck on 2 percent and switched the pc off. Turned it on again. By this time my frown had turned into a blank expression of total apathy and numbness. The result of my rebooting remained the same. Googling keywords and finding similar problems, I followed instructions to download a file called Western Digital Data Lifeguard Diagnostics.
I ran it's Quick Test and Extended Test. I was then instructed to boot into the recovery console and run chkdsk r. I tried following instructions but didn't quite manage to do that. Anyway, I tried restarting again to see if the Western Digital utility helped jolt something into place. This I did about half an hour ago. I got the Checking file system on L:. PCDoc - unable to access any Vista functionality so please calm down.
No dramas, thanks for your help. Will then run WD diagnostics software when completed as per Alan's advice. Hi When chkdsk has any problems running. I would bit copy the hard drive immediately. There is no point in trashing a failing hard drive to death before you have the data.
And that is what booting many times and running chkdsk does. You can run a repair install on the copy to get windows back booting or you could find that the errors are repaired by Windows if running the copy on a good drive.
You have not lived today until you have done something for someone who can never repay you. Thanks Lisa. Details required :.
Cancel Submit. Two choices. Wait or force the shutdown. You can try quitting the process in task manager first, but I suspect it will need a forced shutdown.
How satisfied are you with this reply? Windows XP chkdsk is a tool available for you in Windows. Everyone should run it from time to time because it can prevent your computer from becoming unstable.
There are different reasons why the data on your hard disk can become corrupt. Meta-data is data about the data. Windows needs it to physically locate your files on the hard drive, to know about user access rights for each file and so on. In some cases, the information in the MFT can become corrupt.
This can be the case when your computer experiences a sudden power cut or a system hang. To make things even worse, your hard disk may show signs of wear over time and some sectors may become unreadable.
